[Download] PocketMaps 2.0 – with GPS support!

Posted by Gaurav Khanna on July 4, 2007

Last week I updated PocketMaps to support GPS. Once the GPS receiver is connected to your Windows Mobile device, PocketMaps can:

  • Map your current location on the map
  • Auto-refresh the map as you move to plot your move
  • Display details regarding your current location, like altitude, wind speed, etc.

You can download it from http://www.wintoolzone.com/ListDotNET.aspx?Listtype=1. Below are some screenshots:

[Download] Pocket Maps – mapping addresses on the Pocket PC

Posted by Gaurav Khanna on June 25, 2007

I just finished authoring PocketMaps, a .NET CF 2.0 based application for Windows Mobile 5.0 based Pocket PC devices that does address mapping on the device using the Yahoo! Map Image API. You can enter the address as free text, or with city/state/zipcode details or as latitude/longitude combination and PocketMaps will map it for you. Particularly useful when you are on the move and want to know the location of an address. It also lets you save the map image that you can send via email/bluetooth, etc.

Below are some screenshots of the application:

Support for zooming in/out on the map.

It’s free for download and use – download it from http://www.wintoolzone.com/ListDotNET.aspx?Listtype=1.

DesktopSMS – Send, Receive and Reply to SMS from the desktop

Posted by Gaurav Khanna on July 31, 2006

Ever wanted to compose SMS from the ease of desktop instead of the phone? Wanted to be notified on the desktop, while you are working, when a SMS is received and reply to it from there itself?

DesktopSMS, for Windows Mobile 5.0 based SmartPhone and PocketPC devices, will let you do just that! Based upon .NET Framework 2.0, .NET Compact Framework 2.0 and Windows Mobile 5.0, it allows you to compose, receive and reply to SMS while the phone is connected to your machine via ActiveSync. Below are some screenshots of the same:

Main window to send SMS

Likewise, when a SMS is received, a popup comes on your screen that will allow you to reply as well:

You can even select recepients from Microsoft Outlook’s Contact folder as message receipient, provided they have mobile phone number specified. It comes with complete documentation and installer.

[Download] NotifyOnEmail – Get notified on email about SMS and Missed Calls

Posted by Gaurav Khanna on June 7, 2006

I just finished off with TechED 2006 India at Delhi and had sometime at hand today before TechED starts at Pune tomorrow. So, I thought about writing an application I had been waiting to develop.

There are times when we forget our phones at home. However, we continue to get SMS and phone calls on our device while we are at a totally different location. Would it not be great if our phone could email us details of the SMS received and phone calls we missed?

Download NotifyOnEmail which will do just that. It is for PocketPC and requires Windows Mobile 5.0 and .NET Compact Framework 2.0. Screenshot is below:

AutoReply for PocketPC 5.0

Posted by Gaurav Khanna on December 6, 2005

AutoReply for PocketPC 5.0 is a Windows Mobile 5.0 based application that will automatically send a SMS to the caller when you are unable to answer their phone call for some reason.

This saves you from manually sending a SMS when you get a missed call. Instead, simply set a pre-defined message and activate the application. Any calls that you miss (or not answer) from that point on will be automatically sent a SMS with the message that you set.

This application is an exemplification of the new State Notification and Broker system that has been introduced in Windows Mobile 5.0.

[Download] vCardCE10 – vCard generation library for .NET Compact Framework 1.0

Posted by Gaurav Khanna on September 26, 2005

Few weeks back, I had written ShareContacts – an application for Windows Mobile 5.0 based PocketPC that could be used to share contacts, using the vCard format, with other devices.

Since it was done using .NET Compact Framework 2.0, and also used some APIs specific to Windows Mobile 5.0, I decided to work upon it and get the (almost) same functionality to Windows Mobile 2003 platform.

The result is vCardCE10 – class library that allows you to set few properties and generate a vCard that can be sent as a SMS to share contacts with other devices. All done as per RFC 2426. vCardCE10 is built using .NET Compact Framework 1.0 and is targeted for PocketPC 2003 and SmartPhone 2003 platforms. It comes with complete documentation and can be downloaded from http://www.wintoolzone.com/showpage.aspx?url=dotnet.aspx

Usage is as simple as the snippet shown below:

vCardCE objVCard = new vCardCE();

objVCard.Title = “Mr.”;
objVCard.FirstName = “Gaurav”;
objVCard.LastName = “Khanna”;
objVCard.WorkPhone = “+911234567890”;
string strVCard = objVCard.GenerateVCard(); // send this via SMS to share contact detail

Sharing Contacts from PocketPC – the vCard way

Posted by Gaurav Khanna on August 27, 2005

One of the features I miss in PocketPC is that of sharing contact details with other people without requiring to beam them off Bluetooth – basically meaning sending the data as a message to the recipient in question. A lot of other devices support such a functionality and I have had more than one occasion when I wished that such a feature was present in PocketPC device.

This lead me to explore on how to implement such a functionality and that too, in a standardized manner. This resulted me in looking up RFC 2426 (the spec. can be read here) – the vCard specification that allows us to share such information.

Soon, I was implementing a class library, vCardCE, for Windows Mobile 5.0 based PocketPC that allowed you to create a RFC 2426 compliant vCard:

  1. by setting few properties of the class, or
  2. by generating it from POOM Contact object – based out of Windows Mobile 5.0.

vCardCE currently supports the following attributes of RFC 2426:

  • Firstname
  • Middlename
  • Lastname
  • Home Address
  • Work Address
  • Title
  • Email Address
  • Photo (pointed via URL)
  • Website Address

The generated vCard is v3.0 compliant. Next, I wrote an application to share my contacts as vCard using vCardCE and came up with ShareContacts for PocketPC :

Tried and tested it with phones that understand vCard – and it works great to share contacts 🙂

You can download it from http://www.wintoolzone.com/showpage.aspx?url=dotnet.aspx. It requires Windows Mobile 5.0 based Pocket PC and .NET Compact Framework 2.0.

Make a phone call within the Emulator

Posted by Gaurav Khanna on May 27, 2005

For PocketPC and SmartPhone emulators with virtual radio support, you can make phone calls from within the emulator by using the number +14250010001. The same number can be used to send SMS within the emulator as well!
